The word Saxifraga is derived from Latin terms "saxum" and "frangere", meaning rock and to break, respectively. This is a reference to how many species in this genus have the ability to grow amongst the cracks of rocks.

Plant Care

Propagate by dividing in spring, separating individual rosettes or foliage and rooting them. Sow seeds in autumn.

Plant Growth:

Diverse genus. Leaves vary greatly in shape, but most plants produce only basal leaves. Semi evergreen or evergreen and usually perennials, but some annuals and biennials. Most are mat or cushion forming.


The individual flowers usually have five petals. Small and borne in abundance in racemes or panicles.
