Sow seeds in early spring at 59-64ºF (15-18ºC). Also easily propagated from stem or leaf cuttings in spring or summer.
Grows best with full sun. Where C. ovata is not growing hardy, raise plants indoors as houseplants, or in a cool or temperate greenhouse. In warm, dry climates, Jade plants work well in a border among other succulents, or in a desert garden.
Blooms star-shaped, white to pale pink flowers in spring. Encourage bloom by withholding water when the days get short. Expose Jade plants to several weeks of cool nights without water, and then continue watering regularly. You will get blossoms around the shortest day of the year. Warm nights and regular water will keep the plant healthy, but bloomless.
Jade plants do best in soil that is poor to moderately fertile, humus-rich, and sharply draining. Standard cactus potting mix works fine for indoor plants. Water moderately from spring to fall, sparingly in winter. Let the soil dry between waterings.
Between spring and fall, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer on a monthly basis.
Maintain a healthy framework. In spring, cut back stems to a lateral branch.
Aphids and mealybugs may cause problems. Jade plants are also prone to powdery mildew, fungal leaf spots, stem rot, and root rot, all of which are quite common.
