Interesting Facts

Date Palms have separate male and female plants. Although they flower on their own, they can be induced to flower by a physical stress. Farmers that grow Date Palms for fruit will physically whip the trunks of the male and female plants at the same time in order to induce flowering at the same time.

Canary Island Date Palm   (Phoenix canariensis)

Date Palms are usually very large palm trees (there is at least one dwarf variety). They have thick trunks, grow up to 60' tall, have big, arching fronds up to 20' long, and produce bunches of flowers. If the plant is a female and a male is near by, the flowers will develop into tasty dates!

Plant Care
Planting:

To grow from seed, clean the seed down to the seed coat and soak in water for 1-7 days, then sow in well drained soil and water regularly. If you want to be sure your Date Palm is female, propagate from cuttings or buy a guaranteed tree.

Harvesting:

Thin fruits and bag or cover them early in the growing season to get large, high quality fruit.

Plant Growth:

Young plants do well in pots. Place in full sun with plenty of room to grow.

Soil and Irrigation:

Does best with well-drained soil.  Water freely when actively growing and sparingly in the winter.

Fertilization:

Fertilize regularly for fast growth.
